Graphic Organizers

Graphic organizers help students to see information in a way that is well organized and that helps them to more easily retain information.  When we learn, new information is sorted into specific categories in our brain.  Graphic organizers help to make this process run much more smoothly.

Types of Graphic Organizers

There are different types of graphic organizers.  How to decide which one to use depends on the needs of your students.  Some also will be focused on certain learner types.  It is good to vary the types of graphic organizers that you use with your students.

This is a graphic organizer that I made.  Graphic organizers also can be developed so that there is room for students to write, or empty spaces could be left in order for students to add their own ideas.

Why Do Graphic Organizers Work?

Graphic organizers work because they help to clarify things for readers and for students.  The organize the information in a way so that it is more understandable.  They help students to see better what they are learning.  Graphic organizers are great and they can make a big difference in helping readers to comprehend or to understand what they are learning.

Teacher Made Graphic Organizers

Teachers can create their own graphic organizers.  They can gear these organizers toward the needs of their students, their learning styles, and also toward the particular literature they are studying.  They can make organizers for skill areas or subjects where they find their students struggling.  They also can make organizers more personalized by creating them themselves.  Teachers can and should also involve their students in making their own graphic organizers.  These then can be shared with the entire class while put on the overhead for all to see.  If students are able to create their own organizers, then they demonstrate that they are able to understand them, something that reflects on higher order thinking skills.
